At today’s Co Senior hurling final the great double winning Rathnure team of 1986-7 were honoured by the county Board.
In 1986 the team under Captain Jim O’Connell had beaten Buffers Alley on a scoreline of 2-16 to 1-14
The victory ensured a 9th Co senior medal for the great John Quigley
The 1987 victory was over Cloughbawn on a 2-6 to 0-9 scoreline. The game is best remembered by an incident involving the Cloughbawn mascot a rooster before the game!
This remarkable Rathnure team went on to win the Leinster Club Championship on both occasions with final wins over Laois champions in both finals, Camross in 1986 and Portlaoise in 1987
