Ladies Football Corner with Noel Holohan
Although we are in the middle of winter there is still plenty of action on the Ladies football front for Wexford players. In the past week Loreto Secondary School relinquished their grasp on the Leinster Senior A schools title as they lost out in the final to a very strong Colaiste Iosagain from Stillorgan, the game was played last Monday in Dr Cullen Park. Paudge Brennan his fellow selectors and all the players in Loreto much be praised for restoring the fight in Loreto over the past two years and they just came up against a very strong Dublin side on Monday last.
On the back pitch in Carlow at the same time Presentation Secondary School were busy making progress to the semi final of the Senior C Leinster championship as they comprehensively beat Sacred Heart Secondary School from Tullamore on a 5-19 to 4-6 score line.
3rd Level Success in St Pat’s for Purple and Gold
There was a mixture of past pupils of both these schools and other Wexford schools on the St Patrick’s Drumcondra College team who captured Division two of the 3rd level ladies football league when they beat University of Ulster Jordanstown in the final last week on a 5-10 to 2-8 score line. Wexford players who lined out with the Dublin college included Aine Wright (Blackwater), Megan Smith, Shauna Murphy, Ciara Neville (all Shelmeliars), Nicola Cullen (St Anne’s), Emma McDonald (Crossabeg Ballymurn) and Marie Claire Morrissey (St Martin’s) and also patrolling the sidelines was Peader Cody from Rathgurogue Cushinstown.
All Wexford girls who are currently in 3rd level education are reminded that this Friday the 20th of December is the closing date for applications for Leinster Ladies Football scholarships. This is open to 3rd level students from the province who are studying in any 3rd level institution in the country, please contact your GAA Development officer in your college or any county board member this week if your interested in applying for the award.
From the 1st of January 2014 all underage Ladies football players must wear mouth guards/ gum shields to be covered by insurance. With christmas just around the corner it is an ideal christmas present for players as they will not be allowed to play in the new year without them.
