County teams win
Wexford ladies football had another good weekend at the office with the Junior side beating Offaly in a repeat of last years All Ireland Junior final, the under 16 team had a comfortable win over Louth while the under 14 suffered heartache as three late goals by Meath saw the Royal County take the spoils.
The juniors travelled to Mucklagh in Offaly for the 6th round of the Tesco Homegrown Division 3 knowing that only a win would keep their promotion chances alive. A blistering opening 20 minutes put this game to bed as St Anne’s duo Fiona Bennett and Fiona Rochford clocked up three goals between them in tough under foot conditions as Wexford went to the dressing room leading by 3-7 to 0-3.
Offaly briefly rose a gallop on the resumption but once Wexford settled again they powered home with two more goals one each from Marcella Cullen and Aleisha Cullen and they ran out 5-11 to 1-6 winners, and now face a big game with Sligo next weekend knowing that a win and favourable results elsewhere will see Wexford claim a semi-final spot.
The under 16 girls continue to blaze a trail in the Leinster championship as they travelled to North Leinster to defeat Louth on a 8-9 to 2-4 score line.
The under 14 team were leading most of the way against Meath in the Leinster A championship before three late goal for Meath saw the girls in green and gold sneak home on a 4-8 to 2-8 score line.
It’s a busy time on the local scene too with the under 12, 14 championships well under way while round two of the Ladies Football Adult League takes place this coming week.
