Wexford got their 2015 competitive season off to a winning start with a fine win over UCD in a very windy Pairc Ui Súiocháin, Gorey today
Wexford had played with the aid of that wind in the first half and were 9 points ahead before the visitors got their first score. The home side pushed on with some great points from Ciaran O’Shaughnessy and Joe Kelly to lead by 0-17 to 0-5 at half time.
UCD had the better of the second half and were back to just 5 points behind, 0-19 to 0-14, with 8 minutes remaining.
But the Joe Show was on again and Mr Kelly scored a great goal to seal victory.
Joe Kelly finished with 1-7 in total.
The full time score in Gorey was Wexford 1-21 UCD 0-15.
Talking points:
- Tomas Waters came on as a substitute in the second half having made his long awaited return from injury in the victory over Clare yesterday.
- Daithi Waters made his competitive debut for Wexford hurlers after his decision to switch codes over the winter.
- Conor MacDonald left the field with an injury in the second half, hopefully this was only a precautionary measure by the UCD mentors.
- Liam Ryan & Conor MacDonald were marking each other until Conor retired injured. Interesting clash of our young heroes.
- Lots of competition for places as 6 Wexford players lined out for the visitors.
So lots of decisions to be made by the management team before the Allianz League starts and the squad is whittled down.
Next up for Wexford is a trip to Abbeyleix where they play Laois next Sunday at 2pm.
