New York Wexford Association to honour Art Foley at gala event

Sixty years on from winning his first All-Ireland senior hurling medal in 1955, the New York Wexford Association will honour Wexford great and double All Ireland winning goal keeper, Art Foley at a function on Friday 20th November in the Manhattan Club.  Chairman of the Association, Ramsgrange man John Murphy said ‘this promise to be a night to remember’ and corporate-center-new-york_article_landscape_gt_1200_gridwelcomed all Wexford people in New York to come along.  Murphy said they are also expecting people a number of people to travel out for the event from Wexford and encouraged others to do so too ‘we’d love to see GAA and others clubs back home coming along.’

Art is one the last surviving members of the great Wexford team of the 1950’s which of course was backboned by the Rackards. Art has resided in New York since 1947 when he travelled to the city as part of a team holiday working for 34 years with TWA airlines.

The greatest save…

Art foley

Art is probably best remembered for the new legendary save made in the dying minutes of the 1956 All Ireland final.

In what’s been called ‘the greatest save in the history of the sport’. Defending champions Wexford were leading by two points at Croke Park with just three minutes to play, when Cork’s Christy Ring, in search of his 9th All Ireland medal, bore down on goal and fired a point blank shot. The crowd held it’s breath – Foley saved it – with Ring famously coming in and shaking the hand of the Wexford in acknowledgement of the quality of the save – one great to another.

Wexford went on to win the ’56 final 2-14 to 2-8
