The provisional fixtures for the 2017 Allianz Leagues in hurling and football have thrown up some interesting challenges for Wexford players, mentors and supporters.
Limerick are scheduled to visit Innovate Wexford Park on consecutive weekends, with the footballers arriving on Sunday February 5th while the hurlers play here on Sunday Feb 12th. While on the 12th our footballers travel to Leitrim, a team we scraped through against in 2016 in Bellefield.
The hurling team then travel to Galway for round 2. As in 2016, our league could be decided early, if we don’t win at least one of these two games against the favourites to battle promotion. So its imperative to hit the ground running with no time to ease into the new year.
In football London have to visit Wexford once again in one of four home games in that code. Waterford and Westmeath are the other two visitors.
The hurlers have three home games for the first time in a while with Laois and Kerry joining Limerick on the trip to the sunny south east.
We have a double header on March 26th when Laois hurlers and Westmeath footballers visit.
As these are provisional fixtures they are subject to change and we will publish the final official fixtures once they are announced. But for the moment this is a good ready reckoner to plan a weekend in Galway or Leitrim or invite some family or friends to call while they travel down supporting one of our visiting teams. Supporting your team during the leagues can be a great way to see our country at a time of year when costs are lower. Use the game to visit family or friends or just an excuse to invite people to stay that we haven’t seen in a while. There will be an extra bit of banter with these opposition supporters and we will always have the game to enjoy too.
