Superb extra time win for minor hurlers!

Wexford  0-22 Dublin 1-17

Martin Storey’s Wexford minor hurlers won a hard fought extra time victory over Dublin in Parnell Park today. Wexford got off to a dire start losing captain Andew Kenny to a late fitness test and conceeding an early goal when a clearance was blocked and spilled into the net. Wexford were in the opening quarter trailing Dublin 0-02 to 1-05 but fought back valiantly and at half time Wexford trailed 1-08 to 0-08.

During the second half  Wexford reeled Dublin in and then overtook their lead and in the final minute of the game Wexford were one point but a last minute free allowed Dublin to level it and send the game to extra time with a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-16.

In extra time it was blow for blow as Dublin refused to allow Wexford pull ahead. Wexford led by one point at half time in extra time but on resumption Dublin immediately equalised again! In the final minutes Wexford opened up a 3 point lead with Dublin scoring late on giving Wexford a 2 point win.

Championship ‘knock-out’ phase explained

There have been some questions around the format of the ‘new’ championship structure. Once the group phase has been completed the competition moves into the knockout phase.

The four quarter finals are decided depending on a clubs postion in the group phase table so this would mean the following line up  Group A  1 v  Group B 4;                2 v 3;     3 v 2      ; 4 v 1

Relegation is between the four lowest placed team and the pairing as follows:

5 & 6 play relegation with 5 V 6 etc

New rules come into force from May 14th

There were a number of rule changes passed at the recent GAA Congress and which come into operation from the 14th of May,  to be implemented in all competitions. (They are also operative in Connacht GAA Football Senior Championship on Sunday next, 6th May).

The changes are:

Football Only – “Square Ball”

This has been amended to allow a player enter the small rectangle once the final deliberate play of the ball has been made, i.e as soon as the player kicks, hand-passes, fist passes or deliberately flicks the ball into the small rectangle then the attacking player may enter.  The rule is unchanged with regard to “Set Play” i.e. Free Kicks, Line Balls and 45s – in these instances players are not permitted to enter the small rectangle before the ball.

Hurling and Football

An additional Power of the Referee has been added as follows:

“To consult, on a needs basis, with a linesman or umpire(s) – where neutral – in order to establish matters of fact. In the case of the Umpires, this shall include consultation concerning the validity of a score when the Referee is in doubt”.

This rule change gives the referee power to consult with the linemen and umpires and will be particularly relevant in the adjudication on “square balls”.

Hurling and Football - Rule 2: The Players, Rules of Specification

This has been amended to allow substitutions be made when the referee has stopped play after a score or wide or for a free, sideline puck/kick or where the Referee has stopped play for medical attention to an injured player.

Previously substitutions could only be made when the ball had gone out of play following a score or a wide, or when a stoppage in play was called by the referee for medical attention to an injured player.
