Model Academies

Model Academies

Academies have become an integral part of the pathway to elite performance for GAA players. Academies have nurtured and developed young talent throughout the recent past. However like all great ideas, the concept of academy squads has developed and changed throughout its existence. These academies have changed from being driven mainly by competition to their current existence of being driven by player development. It is a credit to all involved in developing this player centered approach to the development of the stars of the future.

The vision for coaching academies is to “Provide Talented Players with the Opportunity to Train and Compete at a higher level”.

Coaching academies are sub-divided into Schools of Excellence (SoE) U14/15 years and Development Squads (DS) U16/17 years. The objectives for each groups are as follows:

Schools of Excellence – “Recruit and identify a maximum number of talented players to play with different players, learn new skills to demonstrate in a game environment”

Development Squads – “Provide the opportunity for an elite group of players to develop individually and as a team within the optimum environment for player development.

Regional Club Coaching Academies : This program is about assisting players who have not made the academy panels with access to high level coaching and further games opportunities through the GAA Super Games Centre concept. Clubs are encourage to avail of this support in providing players with cross – developmental coaching experience as well as gaining new ideas to implement at their own local training sessions.
